How is edema treated?
There are several ways to treat edema that’s why we often combine these techniques to achieve optimal results as quickly as possible. A treatment plan will be drawn up depending on your situation.
MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage technique that can drain the lymph out of a limb into an area that drains it normally. During the treatment, the lymph nodes are activated in various places and the natural lymph route followed to manually expel fluid.
Lymph taping is an Asian tape method that helps the body to activate blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. During the treatment, pieces of elastic tape are applied to the skin in a special way. The tape lifts the skin slightly to help promote lymphatic flow and reduce pressure and pain.
One of the properties of the tape is that it is waterproof and breathable, so it can last up to 1 week (including during showering and swimming). This creates a unique 24/7 treatment.
In bandaging, the edema is treated with a pressure bandage; this therapy is also called ambulatory compression therapy. It is mainly applied to the legs and arms.
The bandage increases the pressure in the tissues so that fluid is derived from the tissue back into the lymph and venous vessels. When the edema has disappeared, a compression stocking can be measured.
Endermologie is a treatment done with vacuum suction so that the skin and subcutaneous tissue is kneaded into a rolling device while negative pressure holds the skin in the rollers. This increases blood flow, pulls excess water from the body, increase circulation and softens hardened (fibrotic) tissue.
THERAPEUTIC ELASTIC STOCKINGS
Therapeutic elastic stockings are a good method to maintain the edema on a limb (arm or leg). This therapy can also be used preventively, for example while working in standing position, during the pregnancy and the long flight. Due to the extra pressure, the fluid partly moves from between the cells to blood vessels or lymph vessels. Depending on the situation, a standard stocking or a personal stocking will be ordered. The attending physician determines which pressure class stocking you need. Therapeutic Elastic Stockings from pressure class ll are usually reimbursed by the health insurer.
Reimbursement from the health insurance is possible for edema treatment. Depending on your package, the treatment can be partly or fully reimbursed. Huidmedzorg has agreements with most health insurers in the Netherlands. If you have an indication for chronic treatment (eg when removing lymph nodes), a referral from a family doctor is required.
